Looking for a graduate program that can kickstart your career and help shape Victoria for current and future generations? Opportunities will be available to work on the Metro Tunnel Project, Melbourne Airport Rail and Regional Rail Revival as part of the 2021 Victoria’s Big Build Graduate Program.


The Graduate Program is a full time, two-year program (four six-month rotations) across project teams to contribute to the delivery of Victoria’s largest and most iconic rail infrastructure projects.

We will offer you the opportunity to develop technical and professional skills and take unrivalled experiences with you as you continue your professional career in your chosen field.

Learning Series overview

You will be given the opportunity to learn through workshops and activities including:

  • Training Courses – Further develop your portfolio of skills through core workshops such as Writing for Business, Performance Under Pressure, Project Management, Introduction to Leadership, Best Practice Planning and Programming, Career Workshops and more
  • Mentoring Program – Be mentored by an experienced Rail Projects Victoria employee to gain guidance for your career pathway and development
  • Early Career Development Plan – Develop a structured development plan with your manager in each rotation
  • Site tours – Get involved in our projects and see what work is currently taking place


Graduates must have completed an eligible undergraduate degree between January 2019 and January 2021.

Candidates applying must have working rights within Australia by the commencement of the Graduate Program in February 2021 and will not be offered work sponsorships.

Disciplines we offer


Undergraduate qualifications: Accounting, Business, Commerce, Finance

Graduates will work within the Finance Team, providing support to financial analysts. Graduates will be assisting with financial forecasting, reporting activities and management accounting functions. Graduates will also assist with the development of finance initiatives across the broad spectrum of areas to develop their industry knowledge. Graduates will play a key role in the administration of the financial control environment and make recommendations on improving process and systems where possible.


Undergraduate qualifications: Business, Commerce, Finance, Economics, Law, Management

Graduates will be assisting the Legal and Commercial team with a range of commercial activities including contract support and negotiations. Graduates will assist with liaising with key stakeholders on commercial and other related issues, bid evaluations and providing transaction management support to stakeholders.  Graduates will be required to build relationships and manage internal and external stakeholders, including between wider RPV project teams.

Communications and Stakeholder Relations

Undergraduate qualifications: Communications, Digital Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Media, Public Relations

Working within the Communications and Stakeholder relations team, graduates will have the opportunity to learn about developing and implementing strategies to ensure proactive management of stakeholders. This involves managing media relations and all channels of communications as well as community relations including community consultation, public information materials and events. Graduates will build capabilities around drafting high-quality collateral for the Victorian public as well as internal communications to the project team.

Graduates will have the opportunity to understand how to effectively respond to media enquiries and draft content for the project website and social media. Graduates will learn how to manage stakeholder and community enquiries, working alongside a high-performing and driven project team. There will be the opportunity to manage the logistics for public events including information sessions, festivals and project presentations.

Engineering - Civil

Undergraduate qualifications: Engineering (Civil)

As a Graduate, Civil Engineer at RPV you may have the opportunity to be exposed to the design, development and delivery of the upgrades to the rail network and supporting structures including bridges, tunnels, stations, earthworks and drainage. With various projects as different stages of the project life cycle graduates may be exposed to activities such as reviewing designs, contractor works, program and design tracking, liaising with stakeholder and attending safety workshops.

Engineering - Electrical

Undergraduate qualifications: Engineering (Electrical)

Electrical engineering graduates will have the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the development, review and implementation of electrical systems on major rail infrastructure projects, including areas such as Low Voltage, High Voltage, Traction Power, and communication and control systems. Graduates will work to identify project issues and priorities, while assisting with issue resolution and decision making. There will be opportunities to employ research and investigation skills, as well as the initiative to seek, identify and challenge technical electrical requirements. Graduates will also work within multi-disciplinary teams and alongside industry experts and advisors to be exposed to industry best practise and set a foundation for their electrical engineering career.

Engineering - Mechanical

Undergraduate qualifications: Engineering (Mechanical)

Mechanical engineering graduates will have the opportunity to work alongside industry experts to gain first-hand experience in driving an integrated approach in areas such as design, review, construction and commissioning of mechanical engineering and control systems components of major rail infrastructure projects. Throughout the program, graduates will have the opportunity to identify mechanical system technical issues and priorities, and assist with issue resolution, decision making and design development. Mechanical engineering graduates will work within multi-disciplinary teams, working closely with delivery teams, key stakeholders and advisors to capture lessons learnt and gain exposure to industry best practice processes and procedures.

Engineering - Mechatronics/Systems/Other

Undergraduate qualifications: Mechatronics Engineering, Engineering (Adv Manufacturing)

As a graduate in Mechatronics or Systems Engineering you will have the opportunity to work alongside industry experts on reviewing the design, systems engineering, testing, integration and assurance of the rail systems network across one or more of the projects delivered by RPV. You can expect to be exposed to the development and delivery of project scope and technical requirements to meet the operational, quality, cost, time, safety and environmental outcomes.

Graphic Design

Undergraduate qualifications: Graphic design, Design, Visual Communication

Working within the project's in-house Graphic Design team, graduates will develop innovative and creative graphic design solutions and services for electronic and printed communications collateral. Graduates will gain hands-on experience with the document design and production process; from creative concept to finished artwork to delivered product and distribution strategies. Using a range of software including Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop and Premier, graduates will support the preparation of electronic artwork for a wide range of projects.

Human Resources

Undergraduate qualifications: Human Resources, Business (HR), Management (HR), Commerce (HR)

Graduates rotating within the HR team will build practical capabilities around managing end-to-end recruitment, workplace relations, payroll advisory, workforce planning, HR projects (including getting involved in employment programs including the Graduate, IBL, Vacation and Traineeship Programs) and business partnering. Rotations will also involve learning about how state and federal legislation, enterprise agreements and HR policies work to form the basis of HR advice and effective people management practices.

Information Systems/Technology

Undergraduate qualifications: Information Systems, Computer Science

Graduates working within the Information Systems stream will be exposed to and be challenged by meeting the complex IT requirements involved in delivering Victoria's largest ever public transport projects. Graduates will have the opportunity to learn about key IT areas including information management, systems analysis and project management.

Land, Planning and Environment

Undergraduate qualifications: Environmental Science, Science (Environment), Rural Planning, Sustainability, Town Planning, Urban Planning

Graduates will support the projects to undertake key environmental assessments and obtain planning, environmental and heritage approvals. Individuals will gain exposure to establishing and implementing environmental and sustainability frameworks and integrate environmental and sustainability requirements into the projects. Graduates will also assist in the management of land and assembly processes, involving both internal and external stakeholder consultation, preparation and review of key documentation and dealing with legislative requirements.



Undergraduate qualifications: Business, Commerce, Finance, Supply Chain Management

Graduates will be heavily involved in assisting with the management of the purchases of all goods and services required to support the operation of the entire projects. During their time with the team, graduates will learn about the relevant procurement guidelines and policies that Victorian Government agencies must abide by when spending the public dollar. Graduates will build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and will end up working with nearly every function and project within RPV to procure everything from the lollies handed out to commuters during community events, through to the engagement of major professional advisory services.


Undergraduate qualifications: OH&S, Safety Management

Graduates who rotate within the Safety team will develop capability in the promotion of a safe work culture and be involved with the coordination of all health and safety aspects of activities undertaken by project staff and contractors. Graduates will gain an understanding of safety systems development, implementation and auditing, relationship management and providing sound advice in accordance with legislative requirements, policies and procedures.


Graduates may have the opportunity to work within an Alliance, with either the Rail Systems Alliance, Rail Infrastructure Alliance or Ballarat Line Upgrade Alliance. Alliance contracting is a collaborative procurement method used to deliver complex projects. RPV embeds its staff members, along with its contractors and rail operators (e.g. MTM) to form an Alliance. As a graduate working in an Alliance, you will be exposed to a variety of different tasks depending on the project life cycle and function that can include both site and office based roles. On-site roles will provide exposure to the front-face of rail project delivery, where graduates may work alongside top tier contractors.

  • Stage 3: Online video interview

  • Stage 5: Individual interview (if applicable)
  • Stage 6: Reference checks and Police/Qualification Check
